Major Infrastructure Projects
The January 2009 Federal budget included an accelerated and expanded infrastructure funding program aimed at boosting the Canadian economy. In 2009, Delta submitted 13 grant applications for 9 infrastructure projects. Mayor and Council in conjunction with the CAO's office worked hard to lobby the appropriate Federal and Provincial Ministers and their staff to ensure these projects were not neglected. Consequently, Delta was very successful in obtaining grant and alternative funding for infrastructure projects in 2010.
Delta received grant funding for seven projects, totaling almost $14 million in construction costs and alternate funding for two additional projects totaling $16.1 million in value. In total Delta has received in excess of $20 million dollars in funding towards 11 projects with a total construction value of approximately $30 million.
Funding announcements for the majority of the projects were made on September 24, 2009. The following seven projects are the infrastructure grant projects:
- 82nd Avenue Upgrade (Phase III): $3 million project. Construction began in April 2010 and is scheduled to be completed in September 2010.
- Delta Archives Building Conversion: $675,000 project. Construction started.
- Delta Gymnastics Building: $2.3 million project. RFP closes February 11, 2010.
- East Delta Dike Upgrade: $700,000 project. Construction schedule for September/October 2010.
- East Delta Pump Upgrade: $4 million project. Tendering of the project is now complete and construction is scheduled to begin in July 2010.
- Sungod Recreation Centre Expansion: $3 million project. Construction starts February 8, 2010.
- Westham Island Dike Upgrade: $267,000 project. Construction schedule for September/October 2010.
Additionally, Delta has been able to take advantage of the construction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road to undertake the Ladner Trunk sanitary sewer forcemain twinning north of Highway 99 to 72nd Street. Gateway is contributing $650,000 towards the $4 million project. Delta also received funding of $11 million through the Roberts Bank Rail Corridor Program (federal, provincial and Port Metro Vancouver funding) to undertake construction of the $12 million 80th Street rail overpass.
