New Delta Community Animal Shelter
At the January 16, 2012 Regular Meeting, Council approved the award of a design-build contract for a new animal shelter to be centrally located in the Tilbury Industrial Area of Delta. Work has begun to construct the new animal shelter at 7505 Hopcott Road. The facility scheduled to be completed in December 2012 and will be open in January 2013.
Replacing the existing 40 year old animal shelter has been a priority for Mayor and Council, as the existing shelter is not only outdated, but is also too small and poorly located adjacent to the soon to be completed South Fraser Perimeter Road. In addition, the working conditions are no longer appropriate for shelter staff and the many dedicated volunteers who donate their time for the animals.
The new shelter design is a significant upgrade, with a much larger building 12,000 square foot building, animal runs, a welcoming foyer, and increased space for cats, dogs and other small animals. Incorporating a high efficiency heat pump system and solar technology, the new animal shelter will meet a silver standard in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The new location of the shelter will also provide excellent access to nearby safe walking trails to ensure animals can be well exercised.
Staff will provide monthly updates to Council at Regular Meetings regarding the progress of construction and finances of the new animal shelter.
