Kyoto Tree Planting Program
Tree planting is a significant way to mitigate our impact on the environment. Trees help combat harmful carbon dioxide production because they feed on carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. The Corporation of Delta's Landscape Coordinator has secured a grant from Forests 2020 to plant approximately 22 hectares (50 acres) of trees throughout Delta's communities to improve the environment and secure Kyoto Accord credits.
The first planting sites included Ladner Harbour Park, the Green Gateway, and Beach Grove Park where a total of 3000 cottonwood cultivars have been planted. The intention is to provide a balance to the street tree program that requires caliper-sized trees for development sites. This program can provide fast-growing trees suitable to replace mature, large-scale trees within natural settings as well as seedlings of smaller native trees for slopes and utility corridors. To increase biodiversity, plant species will be varied to incorporate cottonwoods, pine, maple, dogwood and hawthorne, among others. Over 20 sites are included in the planting program. The impact of the trees on air quality and habitat will be a significant legacy for Delta.
