Delta Heritage Commission Scholarship 2009

June 9, 2009
Footprints
The Delta Heritage Advisory Commission (HAC) has awarded the 2009 Delta Heritage Commission Scholarship to Ms. Marlena Ginocchio of Burnsview Secondary School for her poetry submission entitled "Footprints" which addresses Delta's heritage in a creative and thoughtful manner. It is described by Ms. Ginocchio as follows:

"The poem "Footprints" begins by describing the colonization of the Coast Salish First Nations (Delta's first inhabitants) by Europeans. It then goes on to describe how even though the Coast Salish First Nations' numbers have been reduced, they still have impact our way of life in Delta. The third, fourth and fifth stanzas speak of Delta's characteristics: its fertile agricultural lands, the Fraser River and the fishing it provides, and lastly Burns Bog, our unique wetland. In conclusion, the last stanza summarizes how the Coast Salish people appreciate the abundance of resources and the beauty of Delta, and how their way of life has influenced Delta's industries and culture."

The Delta Heritage Commission Scholarship is awarded annually to a student graduating from a Delta secondary school. The purpose of this award is to encourage students to display an interest in local or regional heritage, as demonstrated through an original piece of work. This $750 scholarship is applied to the recipient's post-secondary studies.

Mayor Lois Jackson will be presenting the award certificate to Ms. Ginocchio just prior to the Regular Meeting of Delta Council on July 13, 2009 at the Municipal Hall in Ladner. Delta's HAC would like to congratulate Marlena on a job well done and looks forward to next year's submissions.
