National Heritage Week 2008 will be celebrated in Delta during the week of February 18 to 24. Heritage week is recognized annually by the Delta Heritage Advisory Commission (DHAC) with the publication of the winners of both the Heritage Preservation and the Friends of Heritage Awards.
The DHAC is pleased to announce that the Heritage Award of Merit is being conferred this year to the Alfred Jensen Residence on River Road. This stately home was built in 1912 for the manager of the historic Annieville Cannery. It has been carefully maintained since then by present owners Charlotte Wawryk and Gunter Post and remains unaltered in appearance.
Two Friends of Heritage Awards are to be awarded this year, one to Ken Atkey, for his important contributions in preserving and making accessible the heritage of Delta through research, writings and artistic works, and one to the Kiwanis Club of Tsawwassen - Ladner, for their contribution to the heritage street marker program in South Delta.
The Heritage Award of Merit and the Friends of Heritage Awards will be presented by Mayor Lois Jackson at a ceremony on February 25, 2008 at 7:00 pm prior to the Regular Council Meeting at the Kennedy Seniors' Recreation Centre located at 11760 - 88th Avenue, North Delta.
This year, the DHAC together with the Delta Museum and Archives is also presenting a display focusing on North Delta's heritage. It will be available for viewing from February 18 to 24 at Sungod Recreation Centre and from February 25 to 29 at the Kennedy Seniors' Recreation Centre. You're invited to help build the next phase of the display which will be posted in the North Delta Recreation Centre from April 12 to June 27, 2008. Come out and find out about North Delta's history and help to fill in some of the missing information about your community's past.
