2008 Homeless Count - Delta

April 8, 2008

Preliminary numbers for the 2008 Homeless Count show that The Corporation of Delta has 11 homeless people. The findings are the result of a 24-hour count conducted on March 11, 2008 by the Regional Steering Committee on Homelessness (RSCH), a non-governmental organization.

In 2005, the date of the last homeless count, The Corporation of Delta recorded 3 homeless people. While the new numbers for 2008 represent a 267 per cent increase over 2005, we must remember this is an increase of 8 individuals over a three-year-period.

Additionally, the RSCH expanded the 2008 count in Delta to include a greater coverage area. This may, in part, account for the higher number.

Throughout the region there were 1,547 homeless people recorded in 2008. Another 1,045 were classified homeless but staying in shelters at the time of the count. Delta recorded 6 individuals in shelters in 2008.

A full analysis of the numbers will be conducted and a report is expected to be publicly available by September.

The RSCH is made up of community-based organizations working in cooperation with all levels of government to address homelessness in the Metro Vancouver region.
