James Urban Lecture on Successful Tree Planting

It Takes Brown to Make Green
May 4, 2006

Attn: Urban Design and Landscape Columnists and Reporters

The public is invited to Delta Municipal Hall on Monday, May 15th at 1:00 pm to hear the internationally recognized expert, James Urban, speak on successful tree planting. Following the lecture, a tree planting and reception will take place at Municipal Hall

For years, arboricultural professionals have supported putting the 'right tree in the right place'. But, in many environments, the soil has become so poor that almost no tree is 'right'. Mr. Urban suggests that to create a diverse urban forest with healthy trees, we need to make the space right for the tree. His lecture will include a broad overview of the steps needed to plant trees successfully in landscapes that range from suburban lots to a downtown streetscape.

James Urban's extensive research, articles, and lectures on urban trees, tree preservation, and urban soils have set the standard for establishing trees successfully. Urban is the Plant Editor for Landscape Architecture Magazine and the current author of the section in Architectural Graphic Standards on tree preservation, planting and urban tree planting. He is a visiting lecturer on Urban Soils and Urban Tree Planting at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design.

The lecture and reception are sponsored by the Corporation of Delta, the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association and DeepRoot Products, Canada. To register, please call the registration line at (604) 952-3000, and ask for course #171185. The cost is $25/person for the lecture and registration.
