Park Safety Concerns

September 30, 2010

12:00 pm

Following the recent tragic homicide of 15 year old Laura Szendrei in the wooded area of Mackie Park, Mayor Lois E. Jackson and Delta Council are receiving a number of phone calls and inquiries regarding action being undertaken to address safety concerns in Delta parks. The safety and well-being of our citizens is of utmost concern and priority for the Corporation of Delta. As well, Delta Police will remain highly visible in and around North Delta Schools, interacting with parents and students during this difficult time.

Following conclusion of the Delta Police on-site investigation at Mackie Park, Mayor Jackson has directed our Parks staff to immediately trim the bushes and cut all tree limbs to a height that will improve the sightlines and visibility at Mackie Park. Additionally, Mayor Jackson has asked the Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission, Councillor Robert Campbell to review other parkland areas that have been identified as potential areas of concern by the public and report back to Council with their findings as soon as possible.

Mayor Jackson and Delta Council extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Laura Szendrei. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time of loss and grief.
