Last evening, Mayor Lois E. Jackson, with Council's concurrence, terminated the Public Hearing for the Tsawwassen Area Plan and abandoned the proposed Tsawwassen Area Plan Bylaw No. 6877.
"Tsawwassen is a great place to live and we want to keep it just that way" said Mayor Lois E. Jackson. The Mayor's comments at the Public Hearing reiterated the importance of listening to residents' concerns regarding the proposed plan, as it has never been Council's intention to impose a plan without the public's consent.
Additionally, Mayor Jackson requested that the Chief Administrative Officer prepare a Council report that reflects the comments received from the Public Hearing.
The Chief Administrative Officer's report on the Tsawwassen Area Plan is expected to be presented to Council for its consideration in 2011.
The Mayor's full address delivered at the October 28th Public Hearing is listed below.
Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen:
On behalf of Delta Council, I would like to thank all of you, the residents of Tsawwassen, for your participation in this Public Hearing and throughout the process of reviewing the Tsawwassen Area Plan.
At this time, though, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to thank some people who have done a lot of work on your behalf. Two years ago when we undertook this process, I asked Councillor Bruce McDonald if he would Chair a Committee to look at the old area plan, review it, and then bring forth the Committee recommendations. You know, he did just that, and it took a lot of grit, a lot of hard work, and a lot of discussion by Committee members to bring the Committee report forward. On behalf of Council, I would like to thank Councillor McDonald, the Committee and staff for their contributions.
Delta Council is clearly hearing the public's concern regarding the proposed amendments and I do sincerely encourage you all to continue to send us your views and thoughts about the present and future of your town.
Ladies and gentlemen, it is not, nor has it been my intention to impose a plan on this town, nor has it been the intention of members of Council, Committee or staff to impose a plan. On the contrary, it has been our intention to represent the wishes of the majority of residents and this is what we have been hearing:
"Tsawwassen is a great place to live and we want to keep it just that way".
Therefore, for the purposes of tonight's meeting, I am asking for a seconder to the following motion:
THAT Council terminate this Public Hearing and abandon Bylaw 6877; and further that our Chief Administrative Officer prepare a report for Council in which we can reflect on the comments and remarks received during this Public Hearing.
