8:45 pm
Environment Canada reports that today's tide level was one of highest recorded in recent history. This morning's high tide and the high south-west winds combined to create a storm surge elevating the predicted water level by approximately 3 feet to 18.2 feet (5.55 m), a level just 4 inches below historic highs experienced 20 years previously. Work by municipal staff has continued throughout the day and into the evening to alleviate the flooding that occurred. Crews have been pumping water from the flooded areas and clearing the debris deposited by the storm. The sand berm and beach access points have also been reinforced in anticipation of the high tide that will occur at approximately 11:45 pm. Work will continue throughout the evening and staff will remain on duty to monitor the high tide. The Fire Department is going door to door to see whether any residents require assistance. Environment Canada is predicting winds to shift to a favourable northwest and to subside between 2:00 and 5:00 am.
