Walkway Closure

October 27, 2010

12:00 pm

Delta Council unanimously endorsed the permanent closure of a North Delta walkway at the October 25, 2010 Regular meeting.

The walkway, located between 111A Street, 111B Street and the mall at 84 Avenue and 112 Street, has been a safety concern for both residents and nearby businesses due to ongoing criminal activity and vandalism.

A temporary closure of the walkway was implemented earlier this year to monitor impacts to the community. A decline in vandalism/criminal activity was observed during this closure. Although a number of residents prefer the walkway to remain open due to ease of access to nearby stores and bus stops, given the increased level of safety observed during the temporary closure, a permanent closure was recommended to Council.

"The safety of the children and residents of our community is the number one priority" said Mayor Lois E. Jackson, "an isolated pathway with a history of criminal activity is not something we want to continue to exist in our neighbourhoods".

Staff will report back to Council with recommendations on the best method to remove the walkway.
