Political Signs
Excerpt from Delta Sign Bylaw No. 5860, 2000
The purpose of this information sheet is to clearly outline the regulations to be followed when installing Political Signs in Delta prior to and following an election. Signs are not permitted to be installed prior to October 20, 2011. Portable electronic message boards are not permitted.
Definitions
| Political Sign: | Means a temporary sign containing names and messages related to an election or referendum. |
| Boulevard: | Is as defined in the Motor Vehicle Act |
| Median: | Means the longitudinal area of a highway separating two travel lanes, excluding left turn lanes, that is marked by cross hatching painted diagonally on the pavement, or delineated by a raised or at grade grassed or landscaped area. |
| Referendum Sign: | Means a political sign |
Section 7.8 (4) Political Sign:
For all land uses;
Political signs are permitted provided they:
- comply with provisions of the Local Government Act, the Motor Vehicle Act, and any other applicable Provincial or Federal Statutes, orders or regulations relating thereto;
- are non-illuminated, do not exceed two sign faces, 3m square (roughly 4ft x 8ft) sign area on each sign face, 3.0 meters (roughly 10 ft) in height, and are no closer than 0.3 meters (1 ft) in any direction to any other sign;
- are displayed no more than 30 days before the date of and 7 days after the conclusion of, an election or referendum;
- are not placed in or on telephone or hydro poles or rights-of-way, on or adjoining roadways planned for construction activity, under construction, or on newly planted boulevard and median areas, in or on municipal buildings, facility grounds, or on street light standards, street adjoining municipal boulevards parks, recreation facilities or other civic buildings such as municipal hall, libraries, firehalls, museums or similar facilities; and
- are not placed on:
- Ladner Trunk Rd. medians between Highway 17 and 57th Streets
- Nordel Way median in the 11900 block
- Scott Rd. medians between Hwy 10 and 96th Ave.
- 56 St. medians between Hwy. 17 and 6th Ave.
- 12th Ave. medians between 56 and 55 Streets
In addition, the Corporation of Delta requests that signs not be placed in any newly developed areas within a road right-of-way as well as the following developed areas:
- Ladner Trunk Rd. medians between Highway 17 and 62nd Street
- traffic circles and roundabouts located on 116th Street, Ferry Road, Admiral Boulevard, or Westminster Avenue
- grassed areas at Ladner Trunk RD. and Highway 17 adjacent to concrete fence
- grassed boulevards on 56th Street immediately south of Highway 17
