Delta Hospital
This page covers the following topics:
Overview
Delta Hospital is a valued asset in the local community and enjoys a high level of public commitment and support. This was demonstrated in 2002, when the 'Save Delta Hospital' community group successfully campaigned to maintain emergency service levels at the hospital despite Provincial government plans for extensive service cutbacks and downgrades. In 2009, Delta Hospital regained acute care status which it has previously lost in 2002.
In 2004, Delta Council approved litigation against the Fraser Health Authority in order to access information pertaining to Delta Hospital. After a one-year delay, the information has now been received from the Fraser Health Authority. Council is committed to making this material available to the community. You are encouraged to read the documents and provide feedback to Delta. We would also suggest that you share your thoughts on this important community issue by writing to your MLA, the Fraser Health Authority, and the Minister of Health in Ottawa.
Copies of the materials acquired through the Freedom of Information inquiry are available for review at the Office of the Clerk at Municipal Hall and in Delta's libraries. A limited number of documents of interest can be downloaded below.
CT Scanner
Since July 2007, the Delta Hospital Foundation had been raising funds to purchase a CT scanner for Delta Hospital at a cost of approximately $1.7 million. The Delta Hospital Foundation approached Delta with a request for a $500,000 contribution from the municipality to assist in reaching its goal, as the Provincial government committed to funding the operational costs of the scanner. At the July 14, 2008 Regular Meeting, Council approved the inclusion of the following public opinion question on the November 15, 2008 Local Government Election Ballot:
Are you in favour of the Corporation of Delta contributing one-time funding in the amount of $500,000 from existing surplus municipal funds to assist the Delta Hospital Foundation purchase a CT scanner for Delta Hospital?
The results of the election ballot indicated overwhelming support for the allocation of municipal surplus funds towards the purchase of the CT scanner:
- 17,754 in favour (88.41%)
- 2,328 not in favour (11.59%)
At the December 1, 2008 Regular Meeting, Council approved that a one-time contribution of $500,000 from municipal surplus funds be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation towards the purchase of a CT scanner. On January 16, 2009 Delta Council presented the Delta Hospital Foundation with the $500,000 cheque. The CT scanner became fully operational in April 2009 and has been busy every since.
