Ladner Harbour Dredging
Overview
In 2008, 2010 and 2011, Mayor Lois E. Jackson led delegations to Ottawa to meet with federal Ministers and senior government staff to lobby for a number of issues, including the reinstatement of funding to dredge the secondary channels of the lower Fraser River, specifically, the Ladner Harbour area.
Since early 2009, Delta has been working with Port Metro Vancouver and other stakeholders to develop a strategy and identify funding sources to alleviate the sedimentation problems that are occurring in Ladner Harbour and nearby secondary channels. Through its Dredging Policy Local Contribution Program, Port Metro Vancouver provided funding of $125,000 to undertake a study into channel and sediment dynamics, and to develop a longer-term, sustainable solution to the sediment problem.
Next Steps
At the January 30, 2012 Regular Meeting, Council approved up to $2 million from accumulated reserves for the dredging of secondary channels around Ladner Harbour. Port Metro Vancouver has also committed $2 million for this project. In order to undertake the much needed dredging, matching contributions of $2 million are required from both the federal and provincial governments.
In December 2011, Delta retained the consulting firm, InterVistas to undertake an economic impact assessment and prepare a business case for dredging. Once this work is complete (likely by the end of May), staff will present the reports to Council and send the information to key federal and provincial agencies.
