Organics Collection Pilot Program
The Corporation of Delta, in partnership with Metro Vancouver, is conducting a curbside Organics Collection Pilot Program. The pilot program will run for six months beginning in October 2009 and involves two test areas. During the program, vegetable scraps, meats, bones, food-soiled paper and other food waste will be collected together with yard trimmings. The combined food scraps and yard trimmings "organic waste" will be taken to a compost facility for processing instead of being sent to the landfill.
Results from the study will be used to better understand participation rates, collection issues, overall costs, and implications of implementing a municipal-wide organics collection program.
Food waste and food-soiled materials make up a significant portion of our garbage. Removing these compostable materials from our waste stream will help produce a valuable resource, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a more sustainable region.
