Streamside Protection and Enhancement

Delta is committed to protecting our waterways, which are precious habitats for many fish and animals. In Delta, streamside protection and enhancement is accomplished through the application of specific bylaws and programs. For example, Bylaw No. 6349, which created a Development Permit Area for Streamside Protection and Enhancement, protects the natural environment along streams from development or alteration of land associated with residential, commercial, industrial and institutional uses.

Programs aimed at protecting Delta's significant environmental assets include the Fraser River Estuary Management Program (FREMP), which is a partnership among federal, provincial, and regional governments and port authorities. This partnership coordinates planning and decision-making in the Fraser River estuary with the goal of protecting and improving environmental quality, providing economic development opportunities and sustaining the quality of life in and around the estuary.

Another program that focuses on the Fraser River is Delta's Riparian Woodland Enhancement Program called "RiverGreen". This program is intended to offset some of the impacts of habitat loss in riparian environments by recognizing the values of riparian woodlands and facilitating their regeneration. While focusing on the Fraser River, the RiverGreen program also extends to other areas as it is intended to provide a riparian forest legacy for Delta.
