Vehicle Size and Weight Restrictions

Over-Size Vehicles

Driving a vehicle that is over-size in Delta requires a Highway Use Permit. Maximum size of Vehicle without Highway Use Permit is:

Height 4.15m 13.6ft
Width 2.60m 8.6ft
Length 12.20m 41.0ft

Conditions for over-height and over-length will vary with specific routes. Highway Use Permits for over-size Loads are issued according to the following guidelines:

A copy of the applicant's Comprehensive General Liability insurance coverage is required indicating The Corporation of Delta as additionally insured and a minimum of $2,000,000 occurrence based coverage. The permit fee is $25 plus HST per trip.

Over-Weight Vehicles

Permits are issued for Oversize only. No permits are issued for Over-weight trucks. All trucks must be legally licensed to carry their payload weight.

Over-Height Vehicles

The Commercial Vehicle Act governs the height of vehicles. No person shall, without permission pursuant to the Act, drive or operate a vehicle having a height in excess of 4.15m (13.6ft).

Wire Heights in Delta

Individual wire heights in Delta vary. The minimum clearance for any overhead wire or cable across or along any street or lane shall be the greater of the appropriate clearance defined in the latest version of CSA Standard C22.3 No. 1-M87 or 4.9m.

Currently, B.C. Hydro's minimum placing heights with respect to stringing sag conditions above finished grade is 5.5m.

Currently, Telus' minimum placing heights with respect to stringing sag conditions above finished grade is 5.3m. However, it must be noted that in Delta there are many existing situations where wires are considerably lower than this.
