Spring Flood Risks

During the late spring, Delta is vulnerable to rising water levels along the Fraser River caused by the spring freshet or melting of the snowpack. Factors such as a relatively cool spring followed by sudden warm temperatures can cause an accelerated snowmelt and rise in river levels thereby increasing the risk of flooding.

The Mission Gauge and The Hope Gauge

Delta's flood response plan is based on readings from the Mission Gauge and when the Fraser River reaches 6.0 meters at this gauge, Delta will activate its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). If the Mission Gauge reaches 7.0 meters, flood advisories may be issued.

The following instructions reveal how to access both the Mission and Hope Gauge on Environment Canada's website:

  • To view the most recent Fraser River water levels at the Mission Gauge visit: http://scitech.pyr.ec.gc.ca/waterweb/disclaimerB.asp
    • scroll down and select I accept
    • select British Columbia from the drop down menu
    • select Fraser River at Mission
    • and select go to station.
  • To view the most recent Fraser River flow levels at the Hope Gauge visit: http://scitech.pyr.ec.gc.ca/waterweb/disclaimerB.asp
    • scroll down and select I accept
    • select British Columbia from the drop down menu
    • select Fraser River at Hope
    • select go to station
    • and select discharge as the primary parameter type.

Weather, Snowpack Conditions and Water Levels

The Ministry of Environment's River Forecast Centre (RFC) monitors snowmelt, weather and streamflow conditions. The RFC produces forecasts of river discharge and water levels, and releases advisories and warnings as conditions warrant. For more information, visit http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/rfc/.
