Fall/Winter Flood Risks
During the fall and winter, coastal communities such as Delta are vulnerable to flooding caused by high tides and storm surge. A storm surge is an abnormal rise in water levels and can often accompany very intense winter storms, or high winds. The storm surge itself is caused by the wind and pressure "pushing" the water towards the coastline. Storm surges can cross the normal high-water shoreline, as defined by the tide, and can cause coastal flooding.
Winter Storm Preparedness Presentation
In recent years, Delta has taken a proactive and comprehensive approach to flood preparedness and mitigation including flood forecasting and warning systems, emergency preparedness initiatives and structural measures for flood control and land-use planning. The presentation listed below provides information on Delta's flood protection improvements, preparedness and emergency preparedness.
